On Friday I went into my coworker’s classroom to borrow a laptop, and she had a straggling student in her room. This isn’t new. I’ve often seen him in her room chatting after third period whenever I’ve popped in for something at the start of fourth planning. But when I walked in on Friday, I noticed that my book was in from of him. I waited at the back of the room so I wouldn’t interrupt and when my coworker saw me she said, And now you can meet the author!
She explained that he’d been asking about my book, which had been sitting on her desk for a couple of weeks, and kept wanting to know when she was going to finish reading it (not until after Spring Break). He’d asked about it enough times that she told him to take it and bring it back when we return for fourth quarter on March 22. I told him to be honest with me as he reads it and, if he doesn’t like something, he can feel free to let me know.
Today I happened to bump into him again, at the end of his lunch period. I saw him from behind and as I came up next to him, my book was in his arms. I asked him how far in he was and how he was liking it (and reminded him it’s okay to be honest, no obligatory sincerities please). He told me where he was (chapter three) and quoted a specific line that he said he thought was funny. I told him that he has a good memory and said I would check in with him later for an update. It was beyond cute and sweet.
I’ve sold around 25 books, more than double what I thought I would sell (seriously, hahaha), but seeing him carrying it and talking to him about it, really just made me feel so official. Completely made my day!
